Seven of the eight participants in the study were blind from an
early age. One of the participants reported not using adaptive because of
the cost among other reasons. They were quite candid in reporting a range
of impairments from using a ventilator to having problems with learning too much
information at one time. Most were positive about screen readers,
scanners, portable note taking devices, spell checkers, learning disabilities
software, and having material in electronic format. They had a mixed reaction to
taking advantage of government programs except that mostly they felt that the
equipment was up-to-date and the evaluation process was ok. On the
question about the acceptability of employer questions during a job interview
most participants thought that an employer could ask about a condition that
would affect your ability to do the job. Interestingly, the participants
reported spending just over three days a week (mean 24.3 hours) on
educational activities, which was more than on other self directed
activities. The survey responses are indicated below enclosed in
brackets [ ] along with the mean response where appropriate.
